2025 Alumni of the Year: Cherokee County Educational Foundation Honors Jonathan Pope and Pat Tanner
On March 8th, 2025, the Cherokee County Educational Foundation hosted its annual Celebration of Education Gala, a night dedicated to the community and education in Cherokee County.
This year the foundation was proud to honor two exceptional alumni for their dedication and service. CCEF has long recognized the contributions of its alumni at the gala, and this year, Jonathan Pope and Pat Tanner were the distinguished honorees for their remarkable impact and continued support of education in the community.
Jonathan Pope
Jonathan Pope, a 1988 graduate of Cherokee High School, was awarded the Alumni of the Year honor for his contributions to the legal profession and his lasting impact on the Cherokee County community. A local attorney at Hasty Pope, LLP, Jonathan has made a name for himself through his dedication to personal injury law, achieving numerous accolades throughout his career, including recognition in Georgia's Top-Rated Lawyers.
With a law degree from Georgia State University and years of experience in the courtroom, Jon has earned a reputation for his commitment to justice and his clients. Beyond his legal work, Jon has always sought new challenges. In 2012, he climbed Mount Rainier, a feat that he describes as one of the most difficult things he's ever done. His drive for excellence and dedication to helping others is what defines him as a leader in both his profession and his community.
Pat Tanner
Pat Tanner, a 1964 graduate of Ralph Bunche High School, was honored at the gala for her outstanding contributions to her community and her legacy in public service. Pat made history as the first elected African-American Canton City Councilwoman, a role she embraced with a commitment to public service and the community. Her dedication to social justice and her involvement in the Civil Rights Movement were highlighted during the evening as a testament to her strong commitment to change.
In addition to her historic role on the Canton City Council, Pat is known for her participation in the Civil Rights Movement, having marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, Alabama, 60 years ago on March 9, 1965. Her career spans over 30 years in social services, where she made a lasting impact on numerous state and local initiatives, including serving on the Cherokee County Board of Health and the Cherokee Friends of Recovery Foundation.
Her commitment to public service extends beyond her social service roles. After retiring from a career in state service in 2004, Pat ran for the Canton City Council, where she worked to improve the city. In 2011, she was recognized with a Certificate of Excellence from the Georgia Municipal Association for her dedication to leadership and service. At the Gala, Billy Peppers, the city manager, accepted the award on Pat's behalf in recognition of her contributions.
A Night of Inspiration
The Celebration of Education Gala not only celebrated the achievements of Jonathan Pope and Pat Tanner, but it also served as a reminder of the impact individuals can have on their communities. Both honorees have demonstrated that the pursuit of excellence in education and leadership is key to building a better future for Cherokee County. The Cherokee County Educational Foundation extends a heartfelt congratulations to Jonathan Pope and Pat Tanner for their extraordinary contributions and community spirit.
